5 key safety tips for working in cold working conditions

1. HYDRATION AND NOURISHMENT

Ensure you are drinking fluids, as you dehydrate faster in cold weather conditions. Dehydration causes fatigue, headaches. Ensure you are eating enough food during the day specifically fats and carbohydrate as your body uses those nutrients as energy to stay warm in cold temperatures.

2. REST

Working outdoors increases risks to your safety. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep to stay alert on the job in cold conditions.

3. TAKE BREAKS

Your body needs to take breaks from cold weather, be prepared and plan warm-up times throughout your day to avoid numbness.

4. STAY DRY AND LAYER UP!

It’s more important than ever to stay dry in the cold, damp clothing can quickly drop your body temperature, be sure to wear a base layer to draw away sweat as you work. Being prepared and wearing waterproof gear will prevent under layers from getting wet. Ensure your have proper gloves, socks and footwear for the elements. Be sure to select headwear that keeps your head and ears warm.

5. COMMUNICATION AND ATTENDIVENESS

It is important to look out for yourself first, however, equally as important is to be alert to what others are doing on the jobsite, communication is key in any safety situation, don’t be afraid to speak up and make recommendations to others who might not be as prepared as you for the elements.
